Symbols - Pearls

The symbolism and history are so rich with pearls that they have been worn for over 8,000 years.

The pearl is a symbol of purity and femininity; it’swoman’s gem. Pearls are organic, made by oysters in the ocean Like planets and many gems that form this circular shape, they are the result of a tiny grain of sand that, in its natural state, may have inserted itself into the shell, and the mollusc basically covers it in layers of mother-of-pearl, which protects the creature from irritation. So, in a way, it’s a beautiful thing; it’s a bandage that eases discomfort and allows the creature to be safe inside the shell.

In the Vedic tradition, the pearl is associated with the moon, the tides, the woman, all the rhythms of the sea. In mythology, we find pearls worn by Aphrodite. Eve cried tears of pearls when she was expelled from the Garden of Eden. We have as human beings a very close relationship with pearls and have done for thousands of years. They are so perfect, so moon-like; the lustre on them, the shape, the touch of them – they’re a magical element to wear.
