In Conversation with Jayne Pickering

We are thrilled to share that our next In Conversation is with Jayne Pickering. With a celebrated career spanning styling shoots for Vogue and Marie Claire, Jayne has long been admired for her ability to discover and champion emerging designers well before they become household names. Her seamless transition from magazine editor to curator feels like a natural extension of her passion — selecting clothes not just for their beauty but for the stories they tell and the confidence they inspire. We’re so honoured to have Jayne’s curation of clothes, the edit, in our upstairs shop at 201 Westbourne Grove.

Jayne’s edit reflects her years of experience, impeccable taste, and warm, intuitive approach to style. We invite you to step inside her world, where Fashion is not just styled but felt, lived, and shared.

How did you start curating the Jayne Pickering Edit?

My career was in magazines, styling shoots and covers for Vogue and Marie Claire, but I always had a genuine love for the clothes I was shooting.  I was always friendly with the designers and always loved finding new and upcoming designers who weren’t part of the usual group we shot with.

It felt like a natural progression to move from styling full-time to start buying and selling some of the designers that I have always loved. I love the whole selling process and have loved selling out of Pippa Small Upstairs shop on 201 Westbourne Grove. It’s been so fun curating a beautiful selection of clothes from brands like Pero, Runaway Bicycle, Studio La Fetiche, Eka and many more.  It’s fun when people appreciate my choice of clothes.

Who has been your favourite person to style, or your favourite shoot to style?

One of my favourite shoots I styled was for UK Vogue with Patrick Demarchier and Tatjana Patitz. Sam McKnight and Mary Greenwell did the hair and makeup, and it was perfect. Lovely photos came from it.

My favourite Celebrity was Beyoncé.

I love shooting with my good friend Tierney Gearon, who is an incredibly talented, brilliant photographer and always inspiring to work with.

What is your wardrobe must-have?

My wardrobe essentials include a great shirt and well-cut trousers, which usually come from my friend Mario Cornejo, who has a brilliant brand called Zero Maria Cornejo.

What are your go-to pieces of jewellery?

My go-to pieces of jewellery are always from the brilliant Pippa Small.

My favourite piece now is a gold olive branch pendant, which Pippa makes with her team in Bethlehem.

What was your first job in Fashion?

My first job in Fashion was working in Fashion PR for Marysia Woroniecka, who is now a very good friend. It was perfect fun working for her, and I learnt a lot about dealing with designers and the fashion press.

Did you enjoy your role as editor?

I loved my role as a Fashion Editor and then went on to be Fashion Director at UK Marie Claire, where I had the most wonderful editors-in-chief.

I feel very lucky to have had a ‘job’ that never felt like work.

How did you and Pippa Small first meet?

I met Pippa when I was working at Vogue and would go and see her at her kitchen table in Fulham to select jewellery for the shoot. I was mesmerised by the beauty of her jewellery, and Pippa, as she is always a wonder and inspiration to talk to

Which Fashion show in Paris was the most thrilling of all you’ve seen?

The Alexander McQueen shows in Paris were always a huge highlight, and so exquisite that they literally took my breath away.

How do you go about finding new brands to carry at Pippa Small’s upstairs shop?

I discover new brands by browsing Instagram, attending Paris Fashion Week, and getting recommendations from friends.

What is your approach to styling?

I think you have to really know what suits you and to understand that what might look great on someone else doesn’t necessarily work on you. I am always honest with customers in the shop and will say if I don’t think something is working for them.

What is the styling process like? /How do you decide what to select?

When I am working with clients, I look at their lifestyle and again find things that will work well for them to update their wardrobe, and I am always conscious of what they want to show about their body.
