Part 2: Afghanistan, Chapter 3: Overcoming the Challenges

There have been challenges working in Afghanistan over the last twenty years. The change of government in 2021 had a significant impact; we panicked, thinking that we wouldn’t be able to continue working there – which broke my heart. However, people needed the work more than ever, and we got back to it quite quickly.
We had challenges exporting; the country was closed, and it was difficult to get things out – but we managed. It’s been a constant navigation of adapting to changing rules and regulations, and we are continuing to work with men and women. Women are allowed to work in livelihood and heritage skills, and this is something we’re very proud to continue supporting women in. It’s really important to us that we are able to continue hiring young artisans, so that they have a safe and creative job. Our challenge is to be able to sell enough of their work to keep them all employed. This is something we’re always working at, creating designs that are inspiring to people – that make them want to wear them proudly.
It is wonderful to see the next generation who are so passionate about jewellery making, learning new skills, creating wonderful pieces, and having a voice out in the world through their work.
