Symbols - Lapis
Lapis Lazuli is the most beautiful colour on earth. Lapis is an ancient gem that has been mined for 8,000 years in Badakhshan, in northeast Afghanistan, in the Hindu Kush Mountains. These are ancient mines that have been producing the finest Lapis, exported around the world. The Mesopotamians used and loved it; Cleopatra also loved Lapis, and the Renaissance painters used Lapis from Badakhshan for the ultramarine in the Madonna’s dresses.
It is the most mesmerising gem, believed traditionally to be a protector from the evil eye – a power gem. When I think about it it’s something incredibly earthy and humble, but magnificent; it’s a grounding gem. Lapis makes you think of infinity, and the universe, the night sky, and the oceans – it’s an evocative, glowing stone.
There’s an incredible project in Badakhshan where women are learning to cut Lapis Lazuli and to make jewellery around it. This is the first time women are learning and being able to take part in the chain of value with this incredible mineral from their area. These women have looked out at the mountains this stone comes from for so long, and they’re now able to be part of its journey and value, while also earning an income from this beautiful material. Having seen men work with this incredible gem for so long, women are now able to be a part of that, which is wonderful, and a sign of their determination, resilience, and defiance.
