18kt Gold Zen Rocks Ribbon Studs

$1,750

In Japan and China, there was a strong tradition of using stones as meditative objects, of scholars using stones to study the natural shapes and forms created by the energies and movements of the earth. Both Zen Buddhists and Taoists saw stones as the bones of the earth; there was a strong tradition of ‘Petrophilia’ (the admiration and love of rocks).

To honour this tradition, we have created a small capsule collection of rock crystal from the Himalayas, wrapped in bamboo-like strips of 18kt gold. We have also created a small collection in which we have treated gold like a fluid ribbon that swirls and flows like silk. We enjoyed playing with one material and allowing it to appear as another.

The rock crystal pendants are like small portable shrines.

Sushil

Born in Jaipur Sushil and I have worked together for about 15 years, Sushil learned his skill from his family, his uncle Khen Raj who was a master goldsmith and has been a goldsmith for 25 years.

He specialises in hand work and is very proud and loves his work. Sushil and I have spent many hours studying seeds, leaves and flowers to replicate these minute miracles of nature in gold. He has a wonderful instinctive sense of beauty, proportion, balance and harmony in design.
